The Pro's and Con's of Laser Hair Removal you need to know before you make your decision
Compared to some of the more traditional hair removal methods, laser hair removal offers some obvious benefits:
- Long Lasting Unlike shaving and depilatory creams, laser hair removal offers longer-lasting results. Many patients enjoy being hair-free for extended periods ranging from several weeks up to a few months at a time. Some patients also report a noticeable reduction in regrowth.
- Non-Invasive While laser hair removal targets the hair shaft, it does so without invading the skin. Other hair removal methods such as electrolysis penetrate the skin, increasing the possibility of pain and scarring.
- Versatile Laser hair removal is a viable solution for both small and large areas of the body. Lasers can be used on areas as small and sensitive as the bikini line or larger areas such as the back and legs.
- Relatively Painless While some discomfort can occur, many patients report only a minor tingling sensation from the laser hair removal treatments.
What about the disadvantages? There are a few potentially negatives aspects to laser hair removal as well:
- Pricey Laser hair removal is a fairly expensive process and can cost you a few thousand dollars, depending upon the area in question and number of treatments needed.
- Discomfort While many patients report little discomfort, there is the potential for minor scarring, pain and temporary swelling and/or redness from treatment.
- Skin Types Laser hair removal works best on patients with light skin and dark hair. There are lasers designed to treat patients with darker complexions and/or lighter hair, but the potential for blisters, burns and scarring increases.
- Temporary Although laser hair removal is a longer lasting solution than shaving, its not permanent and most patients required continued maintenance treatments to keep the unwanted hair at bay.
