Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Unfortunately, no. Laser hair removal is a long-lasting solution to unwanted hair, but it’s not permanent and in fact, the FDA frowns on the use of the phrase “permanent removal” when talking about laser methods.

Reasons why laser hair removal is not considered permanent:

There are a few reasons that laser hair removal isn’t considered permanent:

  • The laser technology works by targeting the dark matter (melanin) that occurs naturally in our hair. In order for the technology to work, the laser must disable or destroy the follicle itself so that the existing hair falls out and no new hair grows back. The follicle can be up to 8 millimeters beneath the skin but all lasers that are approved for hair removal can only go 2 millimeters deep, making it impossible to guarantee that the laser will reach its target.
  • Another reason that laser technology isn’t classified as permanent is that it’s still considered relatively new. There is not enough long-term data available yet to support a claim of “permanent removal”.
  • And lastly, laser hair removal only works on hair that is in its active growth stage, known as anagen. The anagen stage typically lasts for extended periods and most of our hair is in this growth stage at any given time, so the odds are in your favor. But any hair that has passed its active growth stage will not be affected by the laser, making multiple treatments even more necessary.

So, how effective is it?

Laser hair removal is considered to be a long-lasting alternative to more traditional hair removal methods such as shaving and depilatory creams.

“Long-lasting” can mean anything from a couple of months up to a couple of years, depending upon the number of treatments, your skin and hair type and of course, the laser and technician doing the work. Most people report some hair loss and the hair that does grow back is finer and lighter than before. Assuming there are no complications, you should plan on several initial visits as well as follow-up maintenance to get the most from laser hair removal.
